Theatre of the Wild

March 20 – May 23

Humanity’s longing to understand and reconnect with nature takes many forms, and the subject contains a world of paradoxes. In Theatre of the Wild, Albin Biblom explores the thin line between curiosity and dominance, appreciation and control — revealing our tendency to project ourselves onto nature. The exhibition presents photographs and films from three of Biblom’s major bodies of work.

Curiosity and Control examines our relationship to zoological gardens and natural history museums, whose ambition is to serve as a link between humans and nature, to educate and to preserve. By recreating nature in a more manageable form, they create the illusion of bridging the gap between civilization and the wild. But when does preservation turn into exploitation, and what ethical dilemmas arise when personal fascination is placed first?

Mechkar focuses on Bulgaria’s last dancing bears and their owners — a Romani tradition and profession passed down from father to son for more than a thousand years. Animal rights organizations have now won the battle over the bears; they have been taken into care and will spend the rest of their lives in a sanctuary. A symbolic gesture in the story of humanity’s love for animals. For the bears, it is a journey from one kind of captivity to another.

The Conquest of Space follows the chimpanzee Ham’s space journey, undertaken a few months before Gagarin became the first human in space. It is a tragicomic reflection on the human space program seen from the perspective of animals, based on archival material from NASA and the National Archives.
