An elephant is standing in front of a portal. The reflecting surface catches the light and those approaching. Through the mirror, the surroundings and the viewer’s gaze become part of the work. The portal suggests a passage, but also a condition: Is it the body that is too big, or the opening that is too small? In Gina Disobey’s work, belonging isn’t taken for granted, but is instead something that is constantly negotiated: in the gaze, in the body, in the structures that surround us. Something is standing in the way and refusing entrance. Is the doorway the only way out?
