I Will Rise And Grow Again

Thin branches bearing small female figures shoot up from a pot. In the work, artist Sanaz Hakimi gives shape to the hope for freedom for women and girls in her homeland of Afghanistan. Under the Taliban’s rule, many are deprived of the right to speak, move freely and live their lives. The figures burst from the earth and continue to grow, despite the forces that try to hold them back. As new shoots, they stretch upwards and together form a body that rises towards the light.
