Doris Apelqvist

In a pursuit of working as freely as possible, I allow different materials and techniques such as painting, sculpture, textiles, sound, poetry, performance, and more to meet and collide. One of the cornerstones of my practice is working intuitively and explosively. By staying attuned to impulses, I maintain a tempo, a curiosity, and a raw, unpolished expression. Thick layers of paint, papier-mâché masks, and abstract poetry-landscapes to the sound of radio static and feedback.

A recurring theme for me is the ambivalence between emotional states: inviting and repulsive, melancholy and euphoria, freedom and isolation. I aim to portray the in-between space where contradictions merge and place one in a state that is impossible to fully grasp. In my world, imagination is more important than reality.
