Salah Saouli

A red Persian carpet seems to float in the air in the middle of a room and in the background two photographs are projected onto a white wall. The image on the left is taken above a buildings and a road with cars and the second image is of a blue sky with clouds.

The flying carpet is a magical means of transport that makes it possible to escape the familiar and move through time and space, myth and fantasy. It represents the dream of flying and is a key to ‘other spaces’ where other worlds can be created. Such alternative spaces can be seen as a fundamental component of human culture as they can be found in a range of different forms, times and societies.

Saouli’s artwork opens up for another interpretation of the magical journey. The transportation takes place in our thoughts instead of in time and space. We can stop, reflect and think about contemporary transformative processes in our urban landscapes and perhaps approach them in different ways.
